★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This Sonda is one of many in a chain of comprehensive supermarkets. This location is near Parque Água Branca in the Barra Funda neighborhood. The store would make an interesting stop for tourists interested in seeing the variety of food products available in a Brazilian supermarket. Sonda sells a large variety of fruits and vegetables, and have a decent selection of organic veggies. There are all of the departments one would expect to find in a large supermarket: a full bakery making cakes, breads, and other deserts; a seafood department with a seasonal selection of fresh fish and seafood as well as frozen varieties; a full-service meat department; and an in-store café with a seating area for taking a quick coffee break. Also of note is a large wine/spirits shop within the store selling a wide and impressive variety of high-end spirits and South American and imported wines. Sales staff throughout the store are very knowledgeable about the products and offer recommendations. There are often special offers on items throughout the store. Separate from the store, near the entrance (as is common in Brazilian supermarkets) is a small pharmacy. Two levels of parking are available. Easily accessed by public transportation as well: a bus stop is just across the street.
