Comemoramos a vida santa de um eremita, São Nicolau de Flue, que nasceu na Suíça, em 1417, e passou sua juventude ajudando o pai em trabalhos práticos, sempre inclinado à vida religiosa.A pedido do pai, casou-se com Doroteia, que muito o levou para Deus, tanto que juntos educaram os dez filhos para a busca da santidade. Aconteceu que, em comum acordo, e com os filhos já educados, Nicolau retirou-se na solidão, perto de sua casa, porém, com o propósito de se dedicar exclusivamente a Deus, pois era um homem popular devido aos diversos cargos públicos e administrativos que ocupara na sociedade.São Nicolau entregou-se totalmente à vida de oração, penitência e jejuns, sem deixar de participar nas Santas Missas de domingo e dias santos, além de ter assumido uma tábua como cama; por travesseiro, uma pedra, e de primeiro frutas e ervas como alimento, isto até chegar a se alimentar somente da Eucaristia. Todo este processo estendeu-se progressivamente por 33 anos.Nicolau, que morreu com setenta anos, ao ir para o eremitério com 37 anos, em nada se alienou ao mundo. Pôde ele servir com conselhos e interferir pacificamente nas dificuldades entre católicos e protestantes, a ponto de ser amado e tomado como modelo de pacificador e pai da pátria.São Nicolau de Flue, rogai por nós!

This whole process progressively extended over 33 years. Nicholas, who died at the age of seventy, when he went to the hermitage at the age of 37, was in no way alienated from the world. He was able to serve with advice and peacefully interfere in the difficulties between Catholics and Protestants, to the point of being loved and taken as a model of peacemaker and father of the country.
