★ ★ ★ ★ ★ O Chafariz do Lagarto foi construído durante o Vice Reinado de Luiz de Vasconcellos e Souza (1779-1790), no chamado caminho do Engenho Pequeno, hoje R. Frei Caneca. Era abastecido pelas águas do Rio Catumbi, trazidas pelo aqueduto de mesmo nome, que não mais existe. Chafariz parietal, composto de duas pilastras laterais e um frontão público, num nicho inferior repousa um lagarto que jorrava água pela mandíbula em um tanque retangular. Acima do nicho lê-se em um medalhão a seguinte inscrição em latim, aqui traduzida: “Ao sedento povo, o Senado deu água em abundância, no ano de 1786”.

Infelizmente, como todo patrimônio da cidade do Rio de Janeiro, o local se encontra abandonado necessitando de reparos. Para melhor localização chegar frente a Acadepol(academia de polícia Sylvio Terra, R Frei Caneca, 162) seguir até o final da calçada do prédio do Batalhão de Choque do RJ(magnífica construção), do outro lado da rua, e passar por um estacionamento de motos. Lá está , no meio do caos urbano, mais uma obra preciosa dessa ex cidade maravilhosa.
Em junho de 2018, numa ação não governamental, pessoas preocupadas com a degradação de monumentos históricos, realizaram um mutirão e, munidos de pincéis e tinta, revitalizaram o monumento, que estava com rachaduras na fachada e totalmente degradada. O idealizador da reforma foi o restaurador José Paulo dos Santos.
Uma estrela pelo descaso do poder público.
A população do Rio merece que sua história seja preservada!
The Chafariz do Lagarto was built during the Vice Reign of Luiz de Vasconcellos e Souza (1779-1790), on the so-called Engenho Pequeno road, today R. Frei Caneca. It was supplied by the waters of the Catumbi River, brought by the aqueduct of the same name, which no longer exists. Parietal fountain, composed of two lateral pilasters and a public pediment, in a lower niche rests a lizard that spurted water through the jaw in a rectangular tank. Above the niche the following Latin inscription is read in a medallion, translated here: “To the thirsty people, the Senate gave water in abundance, in the year 1786”.

Unfortunately, like all the heritage of the city of Rio de Janeiro, the place is abandoned and needs repairs. For a better location, arrive in front of Acadepol (Sylvio Terra police academy, R Frei Caneca, 162), go to the end of the sidewalk of the RJ Batalha de Choque building (magnificent construction), across the street, and go through a parking lot of motorcycles. There, in the middle of urban chaos, is another precious work of this wonderful city.
In June 2018, in a non-governmental action, people concerned about the degradation of historic monuments, carried out a joint effort and, with brushes and paint, revitalized the monument, which was cracks in the facade and totally degraded. The creator of the renovation was the restorer José Paulo dos Santos.
A star for the neglect of public power.
The population of Rio deserves that its history is preserved!
