★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Amazing to see the influence of the Portuguese in a city founded by the French in 1612. Very interesting but surprising that the buildings are in such bad shape around the area despite being UNEDCO heritage.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This place has been totally renewed in 1999. I recommend a short visit to this place that actually contains a small museum with the international gifts received by the former Brazilian President José Sarney. He was from Maranhão state. The library with rare books is unfortunately not open to visitors.
