A história da igreja como um todo nos é instrutiva. A origem da IMeL, dentro da história da igreja cristã, está localizada entre a Reforma (1517) e o movimento Pentecostal (1905).
Os Metodistas Livres são fruto de uma linhagem evangélica que pode ser assim resumida: sua herança espiritual se origina de homens e mulheres de profunda piedade pessoal em todas as épocas, que mostraram que é possível manter o calor do fervor espiritual em meio ao paganismo, apostasia e eventual corrupção da igreja organizada.
Free Methodists regard the history of the Church in the Book of Acts and the other New Testament writings as their main heritage. Generation after generation have these records as their greatest source of guidance and renewal. Christians have struggled through the centuries with ancient and contemporary issues, just as we do now. The history of the church as a whole is instructive to us. The origin of IMeL, within the history of the Christian church, is located between the Reformation (1517) and the Pentecostal movement (1905).
Free Methodists are the result of an evangelical lineage that can be summarized as follows: their spiritual heritage originates from men and women of profound personal piety in all ages, who have shown that it is possible to keep the heat of spiritual fervor in the midst of paganism, apostasy and eventual corruption of the organized church.
