Filho de Jean-Antoine, médico prestigioso, cuja fama profissional não o impedia de assistir doentes indigentes, com o mesmo cuidado e afabilidade reservados aos pacientes da alta condição social, e de Marie Ozanam, também dedicada à assistência dos pobres e enfermos. Frederico respira desde o nascimento o profundo espírito de caridade compartilhado pelos seus pais.
Depois de uma infância muito protegida em Lião, Frederico entra no colégio em 1822 para começar os estudos secundários. Estudante brilhante e leitor insaciável, aos 17 anos conhece várias línguas: grego, latim, italiano e alemão, e inicia um curso de hebraico e sânscrito. De espírito sensível e preocupado, é apaixonado pelo estudo da Filosofia, consumindo-se com frequência numa investigação existencial e espiritual, que jamais abandonará.
Em 1831, Frederico, erudito jovem de província, chega a Paris para estudar na Sorbona. Em pouco tempo converte-se num assíduo frequentador dos ambientes intelectuais (entre os quais o salão de Madame Récamier) e começa a colaborar com jornais e revistas. Apesar da sua timidez e do comportamento simples, emergem com clareza tanto a sua profunda humanidade como o seu rigor moral: a sua imensa cultura, as suas opiniões atualizadas e o seu catolicismo empenhado tornam-no rapidamente uma personalidade relevante. Frederico dedica a sua formidável eloquência a moderar os debates sobre religião e política, num círculo literário estudantil chamado «Conferência de história», do qual é porta-voz. Certa tarde, depois de sair vencedor de um debate com um estudante socialista sobre o compromisso social dos católicos, anuncia a um amigo a intenção de realizar finalmente um projeto, que há tempo lhe era muito querido: uma «Conferência de caridade», uma associação de beneficência para a assistência dos pobres,. Frederick Ozanam (1813-1853): was born the 23 of April of 1813, in Milan (Italy). He was the son of Jean-Antoine, a prestigious physician, whose professional reputation did not prevent him from attending the indigent patients, with the same care and kindness reserved for patients of high social status, and Marie Ozanam, also dedicated to the care of the poor and the sick. Frederico breathed from birth the deep spirit of charity shared by his parents.
After a very protected childhood in Lyons, Frederick entered the college in 1822 to begin secondary studies. Bright student and insatiable reader, at age 17 he knows several languages: Greek, Latin, Italian and German, and begins a course of Hebrew and Sanskrit. Sensitive and preoccupied, he is passionate about the study of Philosophy, often consumed in an existential and spiritual investigation, which he will never abandon.
In 1831, Frederick, a young scholar of the province, arrived in Paris to study at the Sorbonne. In a short time he became an assiduous frequenter of the intellectual environments (among which the hall of Madame Récamier) and begins to collaborate with newspapers and magazines. Despite his timidity and simple behavior, both his deep humanity and his moral rigor emerge clearly: his immense culture, his up-to-date opinions, and his committed Catholicism quickly make him a relevant personality. Frederick devotes his formidable eloquence to moderating the debates on religion and politics, in a literary student circle called "History conference", of which he is spokesman. One afternoon, after winning a debate with a socialist student on the social commitment of Catholics, he announced to a friend the intention of finally realizing a project that had long been dear to him: a "Charity Conference", an association of charity for the assistance of the poor.
