★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A hidden gem on the streets of Copacabana — Menescal is one of the last remaining 'gallerias,' or street malls, in Rio, and home to some of the city's best shopping. Its Roman-style architecture is wondrous, and a tribute to Brazil's imperial past. It also houses a place that you cannot leave Rio without trying: Baalbek, a long-time Lebanese restaurant that gets packed around lunchtime.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Traditional gallery (small shopping mall that connects two streets through buildings) in Copacabana.
It's a fine example of such places, which thrived before the appearance of much larger malls (locally called Shopping Centers).
It has shops on each side and protects shoppers from weather.
While there, be sure to taste Arabic specialities at Baalbec - one of the finest in Rio - there's a balcony and people eat standing and walk away; has usually a big attendance but service is swift.
