A comunidade de São João de Petrópolis foi desbravada pelos imigrantes Italianos que aqui começaram a chegar no ano de 1880. Era conhecida por eles como Barracão, porque foi construído um barracão ao lado do Rio Santa Maria, para abrigo dos que aqui chegavam. Conta que, com a vinda de D. Pedro II ao Estado e estando em uma cidade, a mais próxima, para inaugurar estrada de rodagem, lhe homenagearam acrescentando Petrópolis ao São João (Padroeiro); pelo faro de Petrópolis, significar Pedro.
NOMES DAS PRIMEIRAS FAMILIAS: Milanezi, Fadini, Peroni, Vivaldi, Frechaini, Galletti, Dondoni, Perini, Ravagni, Traspadini, Luchi, Pagani, Forza, Villaschi, Lani, Gusperti, Colona e outas.
DATA DA CONTRUÇÃO DA 1ª IGREJA: A primeira Igreja de São João Batista, segundo dados do livro da sociedade católica, foi fundada em 1882, era coberta de zingo e altar de madeira, sobre a qual foi colocada a Imagem de São João Batista, entalhada em madeira por Virgilio Lambert (que era morador de Santa Teresa). A imagem existe até hoje, sendo usada somente na época dos festejos a São João. Em 1895 a Capela foi benzida pelo vigário de Itapemirim, Padre Marcelino Moroni D’ Agnadello, com licença verbal dada pelo Exmo. E remo. Monsenhor Bispo de Nictheroy D. Francisco do Rego Maia. Consta no livro Tombo v.1, fls. 6 verso, a Capela de São João Batista como provisionada para batizar e para casar em 20 de Março de 1899.
Mais tarde essa Capela foi demolida e construí-se a Igreja atual, que tinha também altar de madeira e paredes revestidas de flores, pintadas por Manoel Bezzera; começou a ser construída em 24 de Novembro de 1917, com benção da pedra fundamental pelo Padre Frei Gaspar de Modica e sendo concluída em 27 de Janeiro de 1918, sendo benzida em 24 de Junho de 1918 pelo P. Frei Izaias de Ragusa com previa licença do Exmo. E Remo.Sr.Bispo Diocesano Dom Beneticdo Alves de Souza; o “fabriqueiro” da época era o senhor Carlos Bragoni e os construtores foram os senhores Manoel Antonio e J. Brito, que eram de nacionalidade Portuguesa. A primeira Missa desta atual Igreja foi Celebrada por Frei Marcelino D’ Agnadello.
