★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Construction on this church began in 1580 under the auspices of the Carmelite Order and was the first church of their order in the New World. Like most of the churches in Olinda, it was mostly destroyed during the Dutch invasion of 1631. Reconstruction began in 1654 and in 1704 a large cross was erected in front of the church. Unfortunately, some drunk tourist tried climbing the cross and recently broke it. They are currently collecting donations to repair this relic.
The church sits on the main plaza of the city of Olinda, on top of a hill overlooking the town below and the beach. It’s a great place to start a tour of the city and if it’s open, I’d definitely recommend going in this historic church in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Olinda.
