★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Beautiful building. It is going up a hill and you can walk or take a cab to get there. Definitely pay a visit and afterwards you can visit The Museum of Tomorrow (Museu do Amanhã) which is just a few minutes away.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Very nice, baroque art and detail in this church. Very interesting stories about how the church would open its doors to those of other countries but feared the pirates would ransack the church of its gold so there closed the doors and added wrought iron bars to the windows.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Whatever your views on religion, it's impossible to defend the Sao Bento Monastery. There is nothing remotely artistically worthy of any of the objects on display here, instead all you get is a building covered in gold, in an ugly, ostentatious display that sends a terrible signal about the role of the church in Brazil.
The neighbourhood is also quite boring, with little else to see and do here, although if you walk to the left, and through a narrow arch, you do come to a school, and near there, views over the bay.
Avoid.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This is a place where you can see the ancient love for God demonstrated by the brazilians. There is many elements from Germany there, because of the reform made by the Abbey of Beuron many years ago.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Traditional church with a very beautiful inside. It attracts many tourists because it's one of the few churches in the world whose choir still sing the famous and old gregorian chants. There is good infrastructure outside and a very beautiful building next to it, belonging to the São Bento School.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Beautiful monastery on the edge of town. Worth a visit if you are in Rio for a couple of days. Its a short walk up a steep hill but there was a lift from the car park for less able people. But the inside of the church is well worth it.
