O navio Norsul Trombetas, carregado com 24 mil toneladas de bauxita encalhou em um banco de areia chamado Lanzudos, quando estava prestes a entrar no canal de acesso de uma fábrica de alumínio do Maranhão.

O acidente aconteceu faltando poucos quilômetros para atracar, a menos de três milhas do Itaqui.

12 anos depois, partes do casco foram retiradas, mas ainda existem destroços no local, visto que várias tentativas de resgate falharam ao longo do tempo

The Norsul Trombetas ship, loaded with 24,000 tons of bauxite ran aground on a sand bank called Lanzudos, when it was about to enter the access channel of an aluminum factory in Maranhão.

The accident happened with a few kilometers to dock, less than three miles from Itaqui.

12 years later, parts of the hull were removed, but there is still debris at the site, as several rescue attempts have failed over time.
