★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Inaugurado em 11 de outubro de 2002, o Espaço São José Liberto é uma referência cultural, turística, comercial e do patrimônio arquitetônico de Belém. O prédio principal data de 1749, erguido pelos frades capuchos de Nossa Senhora da Piedade para ser o convento de São José. Com a expulsão dos jesuítas do Brasil, o prédio abrigou, ao longo de mais de dois séculos de existência, olaria, quartel, depósito de pólvora, hospital, cadeia pública e presídio. Na segunda metade do século XX foi ampliado, ganhando mais um prédio, anexo à primeira construção, feita em pedra, areia de praia e grude de peixe.
Foram mais de 100 anos como local de privação da liberdade, tanto para presos de justiça como para presos políticos. Desativado pelo governo do Estado no final dos anos 1980, o prédio foi totalmente restaurado. Renasceu como Espaço São José Liberto, abrigando o Museu de Gemas do Pará, o Polo Joalheiro e a Casa do Artesão.
Opened on October 11, 2002, Espaço São José Liberto is a cultural, tourist, commercial and architectural heritage reference of Belém. The main building dates from 1749, built by the Capuchin friars of Nossa Senhora da Piedade to be the convent of Saint José. With the expulsion of the Jesuits from Brazil, the building housed, for over two centuries of existence, pottery, barracks, gunpowder depot, hospital, public jail and prison. In the second half of the twentieth century was expanded, winning another building, attached to the first building, made of stone, beach sand and fish stick.
It has been over 100 years as a place of deprivation of liberty for both prisoners of justice and political prisoners. Deactivated by the state government in the late 1980s, the building has been fully restored. It was reborn as São José Liberto Space, housing the Pará Gem Museum, the Jeweler Pole and the Artisan House.
