Santa Bárbara nasceu em Nicomédia, na Ásia Menor, pertencendo a uma família de certa posição social. Às ocultas dos pais, fanáticos pagãos, conseguiu instruir-se na religião cristã. Devia ter tido especiais dotes de beleza e inteligência, porque seu pai, Dióscoro, depositava nela as mais radiosas esperanças em vista de um casamento honroso. Mas Bárbara apresentava indiferença às solicitações do pai, até que este descobriu sua condição de cristã. Ficou, então, furioso e seu amor paterno se transformou em ódio desumano. Ameaçou-a com torturas e, finalmente, denunciou-a ao prefeito da província, Martiniano. O coração da Jovem Bárbara sentia-se dilacerado entre amores opostos: o dos pais de uma parte e o de Cristo, amor supremo. Verificou-se nela a palavra do Divino Mestre: "Não julgueis que vim trazer a paz a terra. Eu vim trazer a divisão entre o filho e o pai, entre a filha e a mãe, e os inimigos do homem serão as pessoas da própria casa" (Mt. 10,34-36). Bárbara suportou o processo com firmeza e altivez cristã, protestando sua fidelidade a Cristo, a quem tinha consagrado sua virgindade. Era o tempo do imperador Maximiano, nos primeiros anos do século IV. O juiz, vendo a obstinação da jovem cristã em professar a fé, mandou aplicar-lhe cruéis torturas, mas suas feridas sempre apareciam curadas. Pronunciou, então, sua sentença de morte. O próprio pai, Dióscoro, furioso em seu cego paganismo, decepcionado em seus interesses, num excesso de barbárie, prontificou-se para executar a sentença: atirou-se contra a filha, que se colocou de joelhos em atitude de oração, e lhe decepou a cabeça. Logo após ter praticado seu hediondo crime, desencadeou-se formidável tempestade e o pai, atingido por um raio, caiu morto. O culto de veneração desta santa do Oriente passou para o Ocidente, sobretudo, Roma, onde desde o século VII se multiplicaram as igrejas e oratórios dedicados a seu nome. Esta santa é invocada, sobretudo, como protetora contra a morte trágica e contra os perigos de explosões, de raios e tempestades. Na iconografia cristã Santa Bárbara é geralmente apresentada como uma virgem, alta, majestosa, com uma palma significando o martírio, um cálice como símbolo de sua proteção em favor dos moribundos e ao lado uma espada, instrumento de sua morte.
History of Santa Barbara
Santa Bárbara was born in Nicomédia, in Asia Minor, belonging to a family of a certain social position. Hidden from her parents, heathen fanatics, she was able to learn the Christian religion. She must have had special gifts of beauty and intelligence, because her father, Dioscorus, had placed the most radiant hopes on her in view of an honorable marriage. But Barbara was indifferent to her father's requests, until her father discovered his status as a Christian. Then he was furious and his fatherly love turned into inhuman hatred. He threatened her with torture and finally reported her to the prefect of the province, Martiniano. Young Barbara's heart was torn between opposing loves: that of parents on one side and that of Christ, supreme love. The word of the Divine Master was verified in it: "Do not think that I have come to bring peace on earth. I have come to bring the division between the son and the father, between the daughter and the mother, and the enemies of the man will be the people of his own home "(Mt. 10, 34-36). Barbara endured the process with Christian firmness and pride, protesting her fidelity to Christ, to whom she had consecrated her virginity. It was the time of Emperor Maximian, in the early years of the fourth century. The judge, seeing the young Christian's stubbornness in professing the faith, ordered cruel tortures to be applied, but her wounds always appeared healed. He then pronounced his death sentence. The father himself, Dioscorus, furious in his blind paganism, disappointed in his interests, in an excess of barbarism, volunteered to execute the sentence: he threw himself at his daughter, who went down on her knees in an attitude of prayer, and cut her off the head. Shortly after committing his heinous crime, a formidable storm broke out and his father, struck by lightning, fell dead. The worship of this saint from the East passed to the West, above all, Rome, where since the 7th century the churches and oratories dedicated to her name have multiplied. This saint is invoked, above all, as a protector against tragic death and against the dangers of explosions, lightning and storms. In Christian iconography Santa Bárbara is generally presented as a virgin, tall, majestic, with a palm signifying martyrdom, a chalice as a symbol of her protection in favor of the dying and beside it a sword, the instrument of her death.
