A função dos psicólogos é tentar compreender o papel das funções mentais no comportamento individual e social, estudando também os processos fisiológicos e biológicos que acompanham os comportamentos e funções cognitivas.
Psicólogos exploram conceitos como percepção, cognição, atenção, emoção, Inteligência, fenomenologia, motivação, funcionamento do cérebro humano, personalidade, comportamento, relacionamentos interpessoais, incluindo resiliência, entre outras áreas. Psicólogos de orientações diversas também estudam conceitos como o inconsciente e seus diferentes modelos.[nota 1]
Embora em geral o conhecimento psicológico seja construído como método de avaliação e tratamento das psicopatologias, também é direcionado à compreensão e resolução de problemas em diferentes camadas do comportamento humano.
