Localiza-se na região do Alto Oeste, na mesorregião do Oeste Potiguar e microrregião da Serra de São Miguel, a uma distância de 441 quilômetros de condução a oeste da capital do estado, Natal. Ocupa uma área de 171,691 km². sua população no censo de 2010 era de 22 157 habitantes, de acordo com Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística, sendo então o vigésimo quinto mais populoso do estado e primeiro de sua microrregião. Sua história começa no século XVIII, quando ocorreu a chegada de Manoel José de Carvalho, de Icó, no Ceará, à zona serrana do Rio Grande do Norte, dando origem ao povoado em torno de uma lagoa, em29 de setembro de 1750, no dia de São Miguel Arcanjo, atual padroeiro micaelense.
No século XIX (1875), foi elevado à categoria de vila e, um ano depois, à categoria de município, desmembrado de Pau dos Ferros. Desde a sua emancipação, desmembram-se de seu território os atuais municípios de Doutor Severiano (1962), Coronel João Pessoa (1963) e Venha-Ver (1992). Considerado um centro de zona do Brasil, São Miguel é o maior produtor de milho do estado do Rio Grande do Norte e sua principal fonte de renda é o setor de prestação de serviços, tendo o comércio como importante atividade econômica
São Miguel is a Brazilian municipality in the interior of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, in the Northeast Region of the country. It is located in the Alto Oeste region, in the Oeste Potiguar mesoregion and Serra de São Miguel microregion, at a distance of 441 kilometers driving west of the state capital, Natal. It occupies an area of 171,691 km². its population in the 2010 census was 22,157 inhabitants, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, being the twenty-fifth most populous in the state and the first of its micro-region. Its history begins in the 18th century, when Manoel José de Carvalho, from Icó, Ceará, arrived in the mountainous area of Rio Grande do Norte, giving rise to the village around a lagoon, on September 29, 1750, on the day of São Miguel Arcanjo, current patron saint of São Miguel.
In the 19th century (1875), it was elevated to the category of village and, a year later, to the category of municipality, separated from Pau dos Ferros. Since its emancipation, the current municipalities of Doutor Severiano (1962), Colonel João Pessoa (1963) and Vem-Ver (1992) have been separated from their territory. Considered a center zone in Brazil, São Miguel is the largest corn producer in the state of Rio Grande do Norte and its main source of income is the service sector, with trade as an important economic activity.
