★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Very interesting statue for José de Alencar in the middle of this square. It was designed by famous Humberto Cozzo (1900-1981). The writer is seated, a rather traditional pose and the painels in bronze are not that interesting. But the depictions of a cat and, the head of an indian and the piedestal as well are pure art deco.
Be aware of prostitutes around the place. But as there are also a large number of policemen around, it's not that risky to walk around. At least not during the middle of the day.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ One of the greatest symbols of the Ceara culture is this theater that preserves on its name the spelling of the prominent Brazilian author “José de Alencar”. It was built between 1908 and 1910 with the budget from the cotton exportation. The “Belle Époque”, context when Fortaleza lived a progress mixed with glamor from French inspiration, influenced the architecture of the José de Alencar Theater. Originally, it was designed to be a garden theater, but the garden was only ready in 1975. Currently, the theater hosts plays and shows in addition to a performing arts school.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ What an incredible place to visit in the centre of Fortaleza! It reminds me of the market in Santiago, Chile or the Opera house in Manaus where everything has been imported, apart from the wood, and assembled into a art nouveau masterpiece! The tour costs about $2US and is worth it. You get taken everywhere even into the costume room, on the stage or even underground to the dressing rooms.
