Como toda universidade pública carece de mais investimento, entretanto, apesar dessas dificuldades, tem se mostrado um grande Centro Acadêmico, e só tende a se desenvolver mais ainda com o corpo docente constituído em sua maioria por doutores e mestres, gabaritados em suas áreas de atuação. Conta com diversos laboratórios bem estruturados em diferentes áreas do conhecimento. A UEMA - campus Caxias é uma excelente de ensino superior, fato justificado pelo grande números de inscrições feitas nos vestibulares realizados nos últimos anos, pela qualidade dos cursos oferecidos pela Instituição que está entre os melhores da região. Conta também com curso de licenciaturas (ciências biológicas, matemática, física, química, história, geografia, letras, pedagogia), estudos sociais, enfermagem e medicina. Além de contar com o curso de Mestrado Multidisciplinar em Biodiversidade Ambiente e Saúde para formação dos futuros mestres.

A faculdade de Medicina da UEMA carece de professores, estrutura e organização, não correspondendo à nota alta do ENADE Por outro lado, a Universidade oferece boa estrutura a outras faculdades da Universidade com laboratórios e auditórios. Em termos de Universidade no geral é uma das melhores do estado, mas a faculdade de Medicina deixa muito a desejar, ruim.
Não se faz faculdade de medicina sem um núcleo de cursos similares suficientes e de base ( Farmácia, Biomedicina, Neurociências, Biologia e Química com opções de especialização em medicina. ..) porque só vai atrair estudantes estrangeiros e o local não vai ter retorno.
