Jácome Mário Carneiro do Rego Mello was born on February 5, 1884, in the big house of the Barbalho mill, in the Iputinga neighborhood, in Recife, the son of federal judge Manuel do Rego Mello and Maria da Conceição Carneiro da Cunha do Rego Mello, nicknamed familiarly from Ciçone. In addition to being a journalist, he was also a historian, geographer, philatelist, numismatist and musician. He was an excellent guitarist and great pianist. He participated in several historical-geographic-cultural institutions, such as the Archaeological, Historical and Geographical Institute of Pernambuco, of which he was a partner for 50 years and a perpetual secretary; the Pernambuco Academy of Letters, the Society of Geography of Washington, United States, and Lisbon, Portugal; the Brazilian Historical and Geographic Institute; the National Folklore Commission, among others. He founded the Pernambuco Press Association (1931), along with Salvador Nigro and others. In 1938, he was appointed a member of the Administrative Council by the interventor Agamenon Magalhães, remaining in office until 1945. As a politician he was elected state deputy by Pernambuco, by the Social Democratic Party (1948-1950). He was a great defender of the things of his land, loving and defending folklore, carnival, frevo and traditions. Above all, he was a chronicler of the daily life of the city of Recife. He cultivated indigenous customs such as sleeping in a hammock, drinking guarana and smoking a pipe. He used to say what he thought "with no tongue in cheek" and that is why he created several enmities. He was almost stabbed and killed on a Caxangá train. He lived for a long time at Rua Santo Helias, n.292, in the neighborhood of Espinheiro, where he died, in the early hours of May 24, 1959. His funeral was widely attended.
