The beautiful building of the 'Chalé dos Peixotos' or 'Chalé dos Loureiros', dates from the end of the 19th century (1889), was built by its first resident, Mr. JOSÉ A. LOUREIRO, (Sanitary Engineer), then responsible for the works to implement the SAAE (Water Supply and Sewage Service) in the city of Penedo (Alagoas). Its second owner was Mr. JOSÉ VIEIRA DE FIGUEIREDO, former and prosperous Merchant Penedense. In 1914, the beautiful manor house was purchased by Mr. FERNANDO DA SIVA PEIXOTO, (an entrepreneur in the textile sector and river navigation, between 1914 and 1933), who had just arrived from Bahia and, along with his family, brought the purpose of permanently residing in the Majestic Capital of Baixo São Francisco, City of Penedo. Over time, a large part of the Penedense community has identified the property as 'Chalé dos Peixotos' or 'Chalé do Seu FERNANDINHO' (loving way), according to the narrative (letter) of their daughter ZURICA GALVÃO PEIXOTO. The Chalet was the stage for luxurious events and traditional parties, such as the sumptuous ‘Bal Masqué’ (Masque Ball), which took place in 1916, which moved the quiet town of Penedo. At the time, distinguished people, such as the Governors of Alagoas, hosted honorably at the place; ÁLVARO CORREIA PAES and also FRANCISCO AFONSO DE CARVALHO. In 1930, we also housed one of the Revolutionary Commanders, Colonel ALUÍSIO DE MOURA, and his entire entourage, who crossed from Penedo towards Bahia, in addition to the eminent President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, Dr. GETÚLIO DORNELLES VARGAS The aforementioned property was put up for sale in 1933, after Mr. FERNANDO DA SILVA PEIXOTO had suffered political persecution, which forced him into exile in the Alagoas Capital (Maceió), until 1937/1938, then moved to the then Federal Capital of Brazil (Rio de Janeiro), and the Chalet was sold to Mr. LÍDIO CARVALHO. The Chalé dos Loureiros or Chalé dos Peixotos, has an eclectic style (architectural), with French influence (typically urban), integrates decorative forms of classicism, the symmetry of the main façade, elevated the two side balconies, giving elegance to the building and harmonizing it to the neoclassicism of doors and windows. The work represents in its time, a landmark of the vanguard in Brazil, due to the style and technology (second industrial revolution) used, and it preserves its original characteristics intact, in the year of 1931/1932. In 1996, the President of the Casa do Penedo Foundation, Dr. FRANCISCO ALBERTO SALES, by his own means, acquired the Chalet, and already in possession of the property, published in his newspaper, that the Chalet would be renovated and after the execution of a major work will soon host the Documentation Center of the Museum of Rio São Francisco, because the Museum will be installed in two buildings listed in 1996, by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN); the second of them incorporated to be used will be the two-story house where the Provincial Consulate, Public Jail and also the extinct Headquarters of CLUBE DE PESCA DE PENEDO (CAPESPE), located at Rua Dámaso do Monte, with the back facing the waters of São Paulo. Penedo gets another historic building fully recovered by the National Historic Heritage Institute (Iphan). The site will house the Museum of Man on the São Francisco River and tells a little about the history and culture of the inhabitants of four states.
