★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This church was built by slaves so could have a place to worship as they were barred from the other churches. It is a beautiful church and a must see!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A spetacular cultural experience
The ancient church of slaves in Salvador during the colonial period of Brazil. Here the masses are performed in a Catholic fashion but with a strong emphasis on music. Usually the traditional Catholic songs are played to African drums beat I came into the church when someone was being baptised and I could live a unique experience. Though I knew all the songs, the music was still full of incredibly energy. It was amazing to see old and young people all dancing and singing together to drums rhythm.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ In front of the museum of Jorge Amado, this lovely church is a true genuine inspiration and reflect the happiness and joy of the local people. You have to visit one of the numerous concerts they offer throughout the entire year. One of the top attractions in Salvador.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Very nice, humble building. Interesting information even without the guide. I didn't visit during a service so I don't know what that would be like.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Such a beauty place to visit but very packed with tourists at times. There is police everywhere as part of a special effort to open Salvador up to the international tourism scene. I would recommend visiting this neighborhood during the day and not eating in the main squares as everything overpriced and quality reduced. Such a photogenic place and a wonderful colorful atmosphere.

In the middle of the chaos, you can seek a quiet place to relax out of the sun and enjoy the ‘over the top’ catholic attempts to convince others of a god and also to get a better spot in heaven - it’s opulent! There is a small museum dedicated to slavery at the back of the church with a couple of interesting stories - especially about an African slave who was considered a hero for defying the Português
