É um prédio histórico, construído em 1874 para inicialmente funcionar como um orfanato, denominado “Asilo Nossa Senhora da Pureza”, mantendo-se em atividade até 1891.
Em 8 de julho de 1917, o espaço foi recuperado no governo do General Valadão e passou a funcionar como Grupo Escolar Barão de Maruim. De 1950 a 1980 o prédio foi sede da então Faculdade de Direito, tornando-se, a partir de 1980, o Centro de Cultura e Arte da Universidade Federal de Sergipe.
O Cultart é composto por um prédio tombado pelo Patrimônio Histórico Estadual, onde funciona a Pinacoteca Professor Luiz Alberto dos Santos, com mais de 100 obras de artistas plásticos de expressão nacional, dentre pinturas e esculturas, e a Galeria de Arte Florival Santos, aberta à visitação da comunidade durante a realização de eventos.
Outros espaços também estão situados no prédio principal, como as salas de conferência (miniauditório com capacidade para 50 pessoas), de dança e algumas salas nos porões, como o almoxarifado e salas para atividades docentes e laboratórios de artes.
No prédio mais novo, situado como um anexo no pátio interno, estão as Divisões de Música (DIMU), Artes Visuais (DIARVIS) e Artes Cênicas (DAC), bem como salas para trabalhos de pintura, desenho e cerâmica. Já no pavimento superior do mesmo prédio estão situadas as salas de ensaio da Orquestra Sinfônica e Coro da UFS.
Entre um prédio e outro existe o pátio interno com um palco destinado às várias manifestações artístico-culturais promovidas pelo Cultart.

On the upper floor of the same building are the rehearsal rooms for the UFS Symphony Orchestra and Choir.
Between one building and another there is an internal courtyard with a stage for the various artistic and cultural manifestations promoted by Cultart.

The house itself was reformed without an adequate restoration process, losing wall paintings, lights and doors permanently closed. The director should be ashamed of that, and so the Universidade Federal de Sergipe Dean.
