A atual Igreja do Rosário foi construída em 1767 pela irmandade de Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Homens Pretos de Sobral, em substituição ao nicho de taipa que havia em homenagem a Senhora do Rosário. Era comemorado no período da festa de N. Sra do Rosário, a coroação dos reis do Congo, nome dado aos festejos. A última vez que, em Sobral, se realizou esta festa foi em janeiro de 1889, após a abolição da escravatura, os negros continuaram a tradição do Reisado Africano por algum tempo.
A Igreja do Rosário, a mais antiga de Sobral, sofreu algumas modificações por iniciativa do então vigário geral Pe. José Tupinambá da Frota, tais como as ampliações laterais em 1914 . Em 1926, já como bispo, Dom José mudou o piso de tijolos por ladrilhos hidráulicos e mandou retirar as tribunas laterais típicas do século XVIII. Entre 1941 e 1942 foi reformado o altar mor conforme projeto do italiano Agostinho Balmes Odisio

 History
The present Church of the Rosary was built in 1767 by the brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary of the Black Men of Sobral, replacing the taipa niche that was in honor of the Lady of the Rosary. It was celebrated in the period of the party of Our Lady of the Rosary, the coronation of the kings of the Congo, name given to the celebrations. The last time, in Sobral, this feast was held in January 1889, after the abolition of slavery, the Negroes continued the tradition of the African Reissado for some time.
The Church of the Rosary, the oldest of Sobral, underwent some modifications by initiative of the then Vicar General Fr. José Tupinambá da Frota, such as the lateral enlargements in 1914. In 1926, already as bishop, Dom José changed the brick floor by hydraulic tiles and had to remove the typical lateral tribunes of century XVIII. Between 1941 and 1942 the altar was reformed according to the project of the Italian Agostinho Balmes Odisio
