A origem desse prédio era para ter sido a primeira catedral do Brasil... onde Don João VI havia enviado dinheiro suficiente para construir 2 Catedrais na Europa, mas em 1808 quando ele chegou, só havia as fundações da catedral e o resto do dinheiro tinha desaparecido... parte das pedras deste prédio foi utilizado para construir o Teatro Carlos Gomes que fica atrás deste mesmo prédio.

The origin of this building was to have been the first cathedral in Brazil ... where Don John VI had sent enough money to build 2 Cathedrals in Europe, but in 1808 when he arrived there were only the foundations of the cathedral and the rest of the money had missing ... part of the stones of this building was used to build the Carlos Gomes Theater that is behind this same building.
