Anualmente milhares de foliões chegam de todas as partes para desfrutar da beleza do carnaval que acontece dia e noite nas estreitas e ladeirosas ruas da cidade tombada pela Unesco como Patrimônio Cultural da Humanidade.
Uma das marcas do carnaval olindense são os bonecos gigantes que arrastam milhares de foliões ao som do frevo. Além deles, mais de 500 agremiações, registradas oficialmente, alegram a cidade durante o carnaval. Na verdade, este número é bem maior já que todos que brincam em Olinda se fantasiam e criam seus próprios blocos.
