O Código de Defesa do Consumidor garante que os serviços públicos essenciais devem ser contínuos (Amparo legal, artigo 22-CDC). Não há dívida no mundo que faça o consumidor ficar no escuro, sem água no chuveiro, gás na cozinha ou depender do orelhão. Mas prepare-se para ir banhado e aceso até a justiça responder pelo débito. Por lei, o fornecedor só pode cobrar a dívida do usuário via ação judicial (Amparo legal, artigo 42 e 71 – CDC). Punir o consumidor através de cortes ou retirada da linha telefônica para exigir o pagamento das contas atrasadas é ilegal. Ninguém pode fazer valer a lei pelas próprias mãos (Amparo legal, artigo 345-Código Penal). Dá pena de retenção de quinze dias a um mês ou multa.
