★ ★ ★ ★ ★ If you are looking for fresh fruits and veggies in Rio, seriously look no further than hortifruti. When I first got here I struggled to find a lot of fresh options but hortifruti changed that! They have very well priced produce but their fresh squeezed juices are my favorite. For 5-7 reais you can get .5 liter of fresh green, mango, orange juice or coconut water. They also have a decent cheese selection that is cheaper than zona sul by far.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great, slightly more upscale supermarket. Fresh produce, meat, snacks, roast chicken, wine. There is not everything you would need from a supermarket (cleaning products, etc) but has very good ingredients for making great food. There are several lactose-free products, and the bakery makes nice bread. There is a deli counter where you can get a snack or a sandwich for lunch.
