This gallery is a masterpiece - I’ve never seen such a diverse collection before. It even outdoes the African-American museum in Washington. An amazing collection of art, history, heartbreak and of course - triumph! You need at least a few hours to go through the museum in detail and most exhibits have an English explanation - brilliant!

Extremely unique museum exhibiting some finer parts of the African diaspora that is normally hidden from view. This shines a spot light on some of the art and culture of the native tribes in Africa, situations they have endured and treasured artifacts from many generations. Wide variety of artifact sizes from the smallest figurines to massive models that take up a large room. The space is extremely well used but also confusing to easily navigate and feels like a maze. Got lost a couple times when walking around. Admission prices are extremely reasonable and the locker rooms located near the entrance are large. Staff are all extremely friendly and relatively few visitors make for a great way to take in the artifacts with peace and quiet. I only wish the opening times were longer and if there were more English translations.

Located inside the parque ibarapuera, this treasure of an artifact collection stands proudly as a monument to Afro Brazilians and their role in the construction of modern day Brazil. By far one of the most moving museums I have ever visited. The museum is separated into three levels, each of which illustrates the various indigenous groups that composes modern and former brazil. What I enjoyed most of the museum are the artifacts. No where else have I seen as many artifacts up close than here. One can truly see the work and ingenuity in a lot of the pieces. From a historical standpoint this place is priceless. They have an actual preserved hull of a ship used to transport slaves from Africa to Brazil. Playing above the ship's hul are pictures of when the ship was recovered. The front desk agent told me the hull is one of the most seen pieces of the museum's collection. More contemporary, a good piece of the museum consists of artworks by late artists of Afro descent. If you are in the area I would highly recommend you visit this museum. It stands above the rest in São Paulo in my opinion.

Very nice collection and history of the Brazilians of African descendants. Most panels were in Portuguese so I had to use Google translate.

You learn a lot about AfroBrasilian people through impressive photos, writings, videos ... It's a good place to start when you come to SP.. And then you may choose to walk in Avenue Paulista to understand better and feel the city-spirit.
